Not every order needs the same editing experience. Order Editing rules let you set different actions and edit windows for different groups of orders, while keeping a default setup for everyone else.
Useful examples
Give subscription orders a shorter edit window.
Turn off cancellations for final-sale orders.
Allow address changes but not item changes for a high-value order group.
Create a temporary rule for a specific order or group of orders.
How rules work
Rules are evaluated from top to bottom. The first rule that matches an order determines the actions and timing for that order. “All other orders” is the final default rule; it applies only when an order does not match any rule above it.
Create a rule
Go to Settings > Order Editing.
Select Add rule.
Give it a clear name, such as “Final sale orders.”
Under When an order matches, choose whether all conditions or any condition must match.
Expand Actions & time windows and configure the actions for that rule.
Save your changes.
Use order tags
Order tags are the best option for most workflows because they can be added automatically in Shopify Flow or by another app. For example, create a rule that matches the tag “final-sale,” then turn off cancellations and item removal for that rule.
Use order ID
Use an Order ID rule for a specific exception, such as temporarily allowing an edit for one order. Order ID filters support contains, does not contain, starts with, and does not start with.
Choose matching logic carefully
All conditions means every filter in the rule must match. Use this for a narrow group, such as orders with both “subscription” and “vip” tags.
Any condition means one or more filters can match. Use this when several tags should receive the same configuration, such as “wholesale” or “final-sale.”
Rule order matters
Put the most specific rules at the top and broader rules below them. Do not remove “All other orders”; it is the fallback for every order that does not match a custom rule.
Example: final-sale orders
Add a rule named “Final sale.”
Add an Order Tags filter for “final-sale.”
Turn on Change address if customers may need to fix delivery mistakes.
Turn off Cancel order, Remove item, and Change variant.
Leave “All other orders” below it with normal editing options.
Test a rule with a tagged test order, then test an untagged order to confirm it receives the default rule.
