What is Try First?

Introduction to Try First

Updated this week

Try First is Redo’s try‑before‑you‑buy program. It allows shoppers to try selected products at home, only paying for items they choose to keep. This shopping model solves the common problem of online shoppers hesitating to purchase without physically experiencing a product. The Try First process lets them receive items, try them, decide which items to keep, and return the rest.

Try Before You Buy for shoppers:

  1. Choose items – Shoppers browse your store and add products eligible for Try First (if added as an option).

  2. Checkout with a card hold – During checkout, shoppers are not charged upfront. Instead, their card is authorized to verify that sufficient funds are available and to cover the cost of any items they keep.

  3. Trial period starts at delivery – Once the order is delivered, the trial begins. Redo’s system uses package tracking to start the trial on the delivery date. If a delivery event isn’t recorded, the trial starts 10 days after order placement.

  4. Decision and returns – Before the trial ends, shoppers decide which items to keep. They return any unwanted items through Redo’s native returns portal. At the end of the trial, their card is automatically charged for items they keep.

Try Before You Buy for merchants:

  1. Order placement and fulfillment – When a shopper places a Try First order, Redo’s system authorizes the shopper’s card and releases fulfillment. Once authorized, you can ship items.

  2. Capture or refund – After the trial period, payment is captured automatically for items kept. If shoppers return items through Redo’s return portal, Redo calculates the net amount and captures only what is owed.
